The '''Center for Political Innovation''' ('''CPI''') is a self-described [[think tank]] operating in the [[United States of America]] and founded by [[Caleb Maupin]].<ref>{{Web citation|newspaper=Center for Political Innovation|title=Home|url=https://cpiusa.org/|retrieved=2022-8-21}}</ref>

In August 2022, The CPI was briefly dissolved by its leadership following members' accusations against founder Caleb Maupin of sexual abuse and inappropriate conduct.<ref name=":0" /> After two months of silence, Maupin re-emerged by publishing a self-serving apology video<ref name=":1">{{YouTube citation|url=https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VHAZ5fidyuo|channel=Caleb Maupin|title=Time To Finally Talk About What Happened...|date=2022-11-07}}</ref> and shortly afterwards reopening the CPI, carrying on with it unchanged.

== Ideological line ==
The CPI claims to be focused on the construction of "Socialism with American Characteristics" and is often associated with the phenomenon of [[patriotic socialism]].

Chris Butters of the [[CPUSA]] has accused Caleb Maupin and [[Glenn Greenwald]] of "signaling left, [and] moving right".<ref>{{Web citation|author=Chris Butters|newspaper=CPUSA|title=Signaling left, turning right: The “radicals” rebranding populism|date=2021-12-17|url=https://www.cpusa.org/article/signaling-left-turning-right-the-radicals-rebranding-populism/}}</ref>

== Conferences ==
The CPI has held various conferences throughout its existence, some with notable guests.

=== Chicago: Unite Against the Imperialists ===
On August 6 2022, CPI held a conference in a suburb of Chicago. Guests included [[Kalambayi Andenet]] of the [[Uhuru Movement]], [[Tara Reade]], [[Garland Nixon]], [[Dust James]], [[Stansfield Smith]] from the [[Free Alex Saab Committee]], [[Chris Helali]] of the [[Party of Communists USA|PCUSA]], and [[Nick Brand]] of the [[Movement for a People's Party]].<ref>{{Web citation|author=Elizabeth P.|newspaper=[[Maintrend News]]|title=CPI Conference in Chicago: Unite Against The Imperialists|date=2022-08-16|url=https://maintrendnews.com/articles/cpi-conference-in-chicago-unite-against-the-imperialists}}</ref>

== Dissolution and reopening ==
On August 19, 2022, dissenters from within the think tank accused the leader [[Caleb Maupin]] of sexual abuse and coercion against women in the organization, along with other acts of cult-like behavior towards members, such as overworking CPI members for more than 12 hours a day on canvassing activities (fundraising), forcing them to share a single hotel room and pay for it between themselves, and trying to isolate them from their friends network and even from other CPI members once they had become sufficiently dependent on the Center.<ref name=":0">{{Web citation|newspaper=Medium|title=Caleb Maupin’s Former Comrades Speak Out, His Abuses Must Stop!|date=2022-8-19|url=https://medium.com/@cpimembersspeakout/caleb-maupins-former-comrades-speak-out-his-abuses-must-stop-4167bc1c2c|retrieved=2022-8-21}}</ref>

On August 21, 2022, Maupin was expelled from the organization by the CPI Executive Committee in response to his abuses outlined in an exposé letter.<ref>{{Web citation|author=Center for Political Innovation|newspaper=Twitter|title=An important update from the Center for Political Innovation|date=2022-8-21|url=https://twitter.com/CPIUSA/status/1561369337138556930|retrieved=2022-8-21|quote=Therefore, the CPI Executive Commitee has elected to unconditionally expel Maupin from the organization.}}</ref> Later that day, the remaining leadership unanimously voted to disband the organization entirely.<ref>{{Web citation|author=Center for Political Innovation|newspaper=Twitter|title=Post|date=2022-8-21|url=https://twitter.com/CPIUSA/status/1561462126828404736|retrieved=2022-8-21|quote=As of 3pm CST August 21, 2022, the executive committee of the Center for Political Innovation has unanimously voted to dissolve the organization in its entirety and all operating facets. All dues-paying memberships will be canceled in the next 24 hours as the operation winds down.}}</ref> Additionally on the 21st, Caleb sent a message to his Patrons announcing his temporary withdrawal from social media.<ref>"Patrons,

CPI has shut down. I am going to be mostly silent for the coming weeks. I have closed down my twitter and facebook.

I intend to resurface at some point, but right now we all must ride out the storm. It will be very bad for the next week or so, but then things will calm. We are facing an all out attack and smear campaign.

I am making only this public statement:

A lot of lies about me & what has gone on in CPI are being told, but I clearly have made some very big mistakes. I need time away from social media to get the help I need to ensure I never bring any aspect of my sex life into political spaces ever again. I also need time to straighten out my personal life, and deal with how this has affected my family. When I feel I’m ready, I will likely return to social media, but these things take time. I know I let a lot of people down and we all need time to process this.

Feel free to circulate it if you want.

If you want to stick around and continue offering support to help my family get through this rough spot, that is deeply appreciated.

If you choose to leave because of the fact that I obviously made big mistakes, regardless of the outrageous lies they are being packaged in, I completely understand.

This is not the last of me or the City Building Tendency. But right now we must make a strategic retreat.

Best wishes to you all."

- Caleb Maupin to his Patron supporters

https://twitter.com/MaupinAFA/status/1561868377810927617?s=20&t=wsCzYxMzq3nAs7MdJ_V3Lg</ref>

The dissolution would be short-lived however as the CPI is technically registered under Maupin's name as a private business, thus legally making him the owner<ref>{{Web citation|author=New York State Department of State|newspaper=Open Gov NY|title=New York State Corporation Entity Center for Political Innovation Inc.|url=https://opengovny.com/corporation/6336676}}</ref> of what he preferred to call a think tank. The Executive Committee therefore had no power to remove Maupin from the CPI, as the business belongs to him alone.

Maupin first published a self-serving apology video on YouTube<ref name=":1" /> to mark his comeback, before reopening the CPI a few days later. Since then, the CPI has continued to work like it did before as Maupin's property.
'''Patriotic socialism''' (abbreviated '''Patsoc''') is an [[Opportunism|opportunist]] and [[Revisionism|revisionist]] movement, born in the [[United States of America|United States]], that advocates for [[patriotism]] within the [[imperial core]]. It is distinct from patriotism within [[Anti-imperialism|anti-imperialist]], [[Colonialism|colonized]], and [[Socialism|socialist]] countries. Patriotic socialism has grown to become its own strand of "socialist" theory, especially within the communist movement in the United States. However, this trend is wholly different from "patriotism as applied to socialism". The confusion is often exploited by followers of this ideology so as to associate themselves with more progressive (and successful) patriotic movements, such as are seen in the [[State of Palestine|Palestinian]] struggle or in [[Mao Zedong|Mao]]'s [[People's Republic of China]].

The name ''patriotic socialism'' was originally coined by its followers, thus marking a clear difference with ''socialist patriotism'' or other similar terms, but they started moving away from it when it became too adversarial to use it.

The people who are commonly associated as current leaders of patriotic socialism include [[Infrared|Haz Al-Din]], [[Caleb Maupin]], and [[Jackson Hinkle]].<ref name=":0">[https://regenerationmag.org/american-patriotism-or-national-liberation/ American Patriotism or National Liberation?]</ref><ref name=":2">[https://www.socialist.net/left-patriotism-an-opportunist-disorder.htm 'Left patriotism': An opportunist disorder]</ref><ref name=":1">{{Web citation|author=[[Infrared]]|newspaper=Youtube|title=Socialist Patriotism: America vs. America|date=2022-10-26|url=https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eveOKE4Ones&t=915s|retrieved=2022-10-3}}</ref>

== Origin ==
Patriotic socialism originated from the [[American exceptionalism]] of [[Jay Lovestone]], the leader of a rightist faction in the [[Communist Party of the United States of America|CPUSA]] during the 1920s. He believed that [[capitalism]] was so strong in the United States that a revolution would be impossible and encouraged passively waiting for capitalism to decline.<ref name=":3">{{Web citation|author=Gaius Gracchus|newspaper=[[The Red Clarion]]|title=A True Accounting of the CPUSA In Its Members Own Words|date=2024-02-22|url=https://clarion.unity-struggle-unity.org/2024-02-22-cpusa-hypocrisy/|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20240301215326/https://clarion.unity-struggle-unity.org/2024-02-22-cpusa-hypocrisy/|archive-date=2024-03-01}}</ref>

After the [[Communist International (1919–1943)|Comintern]] purged Lovestone, [[Earl Browder]] took control of the party. During the 1930s, he called for a [[united front]] with the [[bourgeoisie]] and claimed that "[[Communism]] is 20th-century Americanism." In 1944, he dissolved the CPUSA, but the [[French Communist Party]] intervened to reestablish the party the next year. The 1957 party convention argued for a [[Reformism|gradual and peaceful transition]] to [[socialism]] and encouraged the CPUSA to support progressive [[Democratic Party (United States)|Democrat]] campaigns. It also rejected [[self-determination]] for the [[Black Belt]].<ref name=":3" />

==Positions==
Patriotic socialism is a rapidly evolving ideology, and consequently may change its appearance quickly and often as needed, and often lacks any sort of commonly-agreed upon theory or principles that go beyond a few basics.

For instance, the patriotic socialist collective [[Infrared]] published a manifesto presenting ''[[MAGACommunism|MAGAcommunism]]'' in September 2022 as their official ideology, which led to many patriotic socialists calling themselves "MAGA communists" in response. It should be noted that the [[Center for Political Innovation]] dissolved a month prior the publishing of this essay due to allegations of abuse brought up by members against Caleb Maupin.<ref>{{Web citation|author=Haz Al-Din|newspaper=[[Infrared]]|title=THE RISE OF MAGA COMMUNISM|date=2022-9-18|url=https://showinfrared.substack.com/p/the-rise-of-maga-communism?sd=pf|retrieved=2022-9-22}}</ref> Before the MAGA Communism episode, Infrared briefly attempted to promote the "Mechatankie" name, though it didn't take and was quickly abandoned.<ref>{{News citation|author=Infrared|newspaper=Youtube|title=Rise of the Mecha-Tankies|date=2022-7-19|url=https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KPojH2KtLks|retrieved=2022-7-20|quote=[From video description] Mecha-Tankies are finally taking form as the ultimate Infrared hyperstition, which was the original intention of the collective from the very beginning. In today's stream, I will briefly explain and go over my recent article 'on the PatSoc' split to better explain what Mecha-Tankies are, the threat posed by social-democracy, and the recent controversy surrounding productive and unproductive labor.}}</ref>

In 2024, the patriotic socialist [[American Communist Party (current)|American Communist Party]] was established by [[Noah Khrachvik]], [[Carlos Garrido]] and [[Edward Smith]] of [[Midwestern Marx]], [[Haz]], [[Jackson Hinkle]], [[Kyle Pettis]], [[Rev Laskaris]], [[Chris Helali|Christopher Helali]], [[Henry Ahmad]] and [[Grayson Preutz]].<ref>{{Web citation|newspaper=American Communist Party|title=Declaration of the American Communist Party|date=no date provided|url=https://acp.us/declaration|archive-url=https://archive.ph/K66GS}}</ref> Following the founding of their own party, patriotic socialists in the USA started calling themselves American Communists in response, claiming that they had never used the term "patriotic socialist". However, Haz has been recorded on stream in several instances using the term patriotic socialism as a term for his movement, including in a stream reuploaded on Youtube in May 2022.<ref>{{Video citation|url=https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YveNgtD-jaA|channel=Talonsight|title=Haz on the Aesthetics of "Patriotic Socialism" - Infrared Show Clip|date=2022-05-23}}</ref>

Other general positions can similarly be identified. Patriotic socialists advocate for an alliance with, and indeed commonly tail the interests and ideological tendency of, the [[petty bourgeoisie]] (whom they conflate with the [[proletariat]]).<ref>{{Web citation|author=[[Infrared]]|newspaper=Youtube|title=Rise of the Mecha-Tankies|date=2022-7-19|url=https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KPojH2KtLks|retrieved=2022-10-3}}</ref> They further tend to promote [[Aleksandr Dugin|Dugin]] and [[Lyndon LaRouche|LaRouche]] to their followers and align with them; two [[Anti-communism|anti-communist]], quasi-[[Fascism|fascist]] and [[Mysticism|mystic]] writers. They also align with [[right-wing]] [[Populism|populist]] protest movements, such as the Tea Party movement, or the [[2022 Truckers' Protest|2022 Trucker protests]].

Several patriotic socialists were very vocal about the 2022 Cuban constitutional referendum that abolished the monopoly of the nuclear family and recognized many other forms of family. They decried it as "degeneracy" and considered Cuba to no longer be socialist. This indicates a large share of chauvinist and reactionary opinions in the movement that are not being addressed.

They wholly reject [[decolonization]] in the United States, holding instead that if workers are liberated, it would include Native and minority workers too.<ref name=":1" />

==Praxis==
Patriotic socialism, even after several years of existence, is a movement that remains almost entirely online, focusing on the of social media to create virality and thus visibility.

Patriotic socialists initially had yet to form a political party, instead promoting the ''CPUSA 2036'' slogan: an attempt at infiltrating the [[Communist Party of the United States of America|Communist Party of the USA]] and winning the 2036 presidential election through it.

On 21 July 2024, Haz, along with several other figures such as Jackson Hinkle and Noah, Edward and Carlos from Midwestern Marx would release a declaration for the creation of a supposed new political party, the American Communist Party.<ref>{{Web citation|author=Haz Al-Din, Kyle Pettis, Rev Laskaris, Noah Khrachvik, Christopher Helali, Carlos Garrido, Eddie "Liger" Smith, Jackson Hinkle, Henry Ahmad, Grayson Pieutz|newspaper=American Communist Party|title=Declaration of the American Communist Party|date=2024-07-21|url=https://acp.us/declaration|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20240722075743/https://acp.us/declaration|archive-date=2024-07-22|retrieved=2024-07-22}}</ref> The statement notably ended with the implication that several CPUSA clubs had signed off on the statement, but most of those clubs publicly denied any involvement with the ACP via [[Twitter]].<ref>{{Web citation|author=@red_help_atx|newspaper=Twitter|title=We did not sign this...|date=2022-07-21|url=https://x.com/red_help_atx/status/1815178383883452574|retrieved=2022-07-22}}</ref><ref>{{Web citation|author=@AlbanyNY_CPUSA|newspaper=Twitter|title=We're not going to quote...|date=2024-07-21|url=https://x.com/AlbanyNY_CPUSA/status/1815200821144883350|retrieved=2024-07-22|quote=}}</ref>

Patriotic socialists tend to attack the left—including the projects and efforts of communists and [[Marxism–Leninism|Marxist-Leninists]], particularly when it is internet-based, but almost never the right. In fact, they often agree with conservatives and boost their message.

== Marxist views on patriotism and nationalism ==
[[Mao Zedong|Mao]] only supported patriotism for [[Anti-imperialism|anti-imperialist]] or [[Colonialism|colonized]] countries. An example of this tactic is [[Republic of China|China]]'s United Front against [[Empire of Japan (1868–1947)|Japanese]] imperialism. Mao condemned patriotism for imperialist [[Fascism|fascist]] countries like [[German Reich (1933–1945)|Germany]] and Japan:

{{Quote|Can a Communist, who is an [[proletarian internationalism|internationalist]], at the same time be a patriot? We hold that he not only can be but must be. The specific content of patriotism is determined by historical conditions. There is the "patriotism" of the Japanese aggressors and of [[Hitler]], and there is our patriotism. Communists must resolutely oppose the "patriotism" of the Japanese aggressors and of Hitler. The Communists of Japan and Germany are defeatists with regard to the wars being waged by their countries. To bring about the defeat of the Japanese aggressors and of Hitler by every possible means is in the interests of the Japanese and the German people, and the more complete the defeat the better. This is what the [[Japanese Communist Party|Japanese]] and [[Communist Party of Germany|German Communists]] should be doing and what they are doing. For the wars launched by the Japanese aggressors and Hitler are harming their own people as well as the people of the world. China's case is different, because she is the victim of aggression. Chinese Communists must therefore combine patriotism with internationalism.|[[Mao Zedong]]|[https://www.marxists.org/reference/archive/mao/selected-works/volume-2/mswv2_10.htm The Role of the Communist Party of China in the National War]|October 1938}}

Lenin also opposed patriotism and [[nationalism]] for oppressor nations and called for [[self-determination]] for oppressed nations:

{{Quote|Consequently, the interests of the Great-Russian proletariat require that the masses be systematically educated to champion—most resolutely, consistently, boldly and in a revolutionary manner—complete equality and the right to self-determination for all the nations oppressed by the Great Russians.|[[Vladimir Lenin]]|[https://www.marxists.org/archive/lenin/works/1914/dec/12a.htm On the National Pride of the Great Russians]|1914}}

[[Joseph Stalin|Stalin]] stated that nationalism is not inherently good or bad and that Marxists should only support national movements that weaken imperialism and not those that strengthen it:

{{Quote|This does not mean, of course, that the [[proletariat]] must support every national movement, everywhere and always, in every individual concrete case. It means that support must be given to such national movements as tend to weaken, to overthrow imperialism, and not to strengthen and preserve it. Cases occur when the national movements in certain oppressed countries came into conflict with the interests of the development of the proletarian movement. In such cases support is, of course, entirely out of the question. The question of the rights of nations is not an isolated, self-sufficient question; it is a part of the general problem of the proletarian revolution, subordinate to the whole, and must be considered from the point of view of the whole. In the forties of the last century [[Marx]] supported the national movement of the [[Poland|Poles]] and [[Hungary|Hungarians]] and was opposed to the national movement of the [[Czechia|Czechs]] and the South Slavs. Why? Because the Czechs and the South Slavs were then "reactionary peoples," "[[Russian Empire (1721–1917)|Russian]] outposts" in Europe, outposts of [[absolutism]]; whereas the Poles and the Hungarians were "revolutionary peoples," fighting against absolutism.|[[Joseph Stalin]]|[https://www.marxists.org/reference/archive/stalin/works/1924/foundations-leninism/ch06.htm The Foundations of Leninism: The National Question]|1924}}

[[File:Anarchism.png|thumb|The letter A in a circle, a common anarchist symbol]]
'''Anarchism''' is political philosophy which is skeptical of authority and rejects coercive hierarchies, including the very existence of a [[state]]. While Marxists also advocate for a stateless society (a [[Communism|communist society]]), Marxists tend to criticize anarchism as [[Utopian socialism|utopian]] and unscientific for rejecting the transitionary phase of the [[dictatorship of the proletariat]]. The philosophical basis of anarchism is [[individualism]], [[subjectivism]] and [[voluntarism]], which can be categorized as [[Petty-bourgeoisie|petty-bourgeois]] deviations from [[Proletariat|proletarian]] struggle.<ref name=":0">Rosental, M.; e Iudin, P. (1973): ''Diccionario filosófico'' (p. 13). Buenos Aires: Universo, 1973.</ref> Anarchism is a part of the broader trend of [[libertarian socialism]].
==Origin==
The advent of anarchism is tied to the names of Schmidt ([[Max Stirner|Stirner]]), [[Pierre-Joseph Proudhon|Proudhon]], and [[Mikhail Bakunin|Bakunin]], whose utopian theories were subjected to criticism in the works of [[Marx]] and [[Engels]]. In the nineteenth century, anarchism spread through France, Italy and Spain.<ref name=":0" />

<nowiki>*</nowiki> Post-leftism and post-anarchism reject political philosophy altogether as a reactionary force, but they practically advocate for anarchism.

<nowiki>**</nowiki> Contrary to its name, anarcho-capitalism is based in [[Right-libertarianism|right-libertarian]] principles and has nothing to do with anarchism. The leading theoretician and founder of anarcho-capitalism, Murray Rothbard, denied any identification with anarchism.<ref>{{Web citation
| quote = We must therefore turn to history for enlightenment; here we find that none of the proclaimed anarchist groups correspond to the libertarian position, that even the best of them have unrealistic and socialistic elements in their doctrines. Furthermore, we find that all of the current anarchists are irrational collectivists, and therefore at opposite poles from our position. We must therefore conclude that we are not anarchists, and that those who call us anarchists are not on firm etymological ground, and are being completely unhistorical.}}</ref>

==Characteristics==
Anarchism does not go beyond general phrases against exploitation, it does not understand what the causes of exploitation are, nor the [[class struggle]] as a creative force for the realization of [[socialism]]. The anarchist denial of political struggle contributes objectively to the subordination of the [[Proletariat|working class]] to [[Bourgeoisie|bourgeois]] politics.

The most essential thing in the struggle against anarchism lies in the problem of how the [[revolution]] should proceed in relation to the [[State]] and in the problem of the State in general. Anarchists advocate for the immediate annihilation of the State. They do not recognize that it is possible to take advantage of the bourgeois State to prepare the proletariat for the revolution.

After 1917, anarchism in Russia became a [[counter-revolutionary]] tendency. Historically, Anarchism saw brief surges in popularity in [[Anarchist Catalonia (1936–1939)|Catalonia]], the [[Ukrainian Free Territory|Free Territory]] in [[Ukraine]] and in the Korean Peninsula. Today, it enjoys a certain influence in the United States and Europe.<ref name=":0" />

==Distinctions between Marxists and Anarchists==
The essential distinctions in the criteria of Marxists and anarchists were reduced by [[Lenin]] to three fundamental points:

*In that the first, whose end is the complete withering away of the State, acknowledge that this end can only be achieved after the socialist revolution has abolished classes as a result of the establishment of [[socialism]]. The latter, on the other hand, want to completely destroy the State overnight, without understanding the conditions in which this destruction can take place.
*They first acknowledge the need for the [[proletariat]], after conquering political power, to totally destroy the former State machine, replacing it with a new one. The latter advocate the destruction of the state machine and have an absolutely confused idea of what the proletariat must replace the machine with and how it will exercise revolutionary power. Anarchists reject even the use of state power by the revolutionary proletariat, their revolutionary dictatorship.
* The first demand that the proletariat prepare for revolution by taking advantage of the modern State, while anarchists reject it.<ref>Rumiántsev, A. (1981): ''Comunismo científico'' (diccionario), p. 14-17. Moscú: Progreso, 1981.</ref>
In the [[State & Revolution]], it has been clearly laid further when Marx emphasised of the "revolutionary and transient form" of the state that the proletariat still needs. Instead of immediately abolishing the state as the anarchists desire, the Marxist stance remains that the proletariat still needs the state as well as the resources and methods of state power to use against the oppressor class or exploiters. The keypoint here is "temporary", for eventually, the state will eventually wither away.

== Origin ==

==Positions==

==Praxis==

{{Quote|Can a Communist, who is an [[proletarian internationalism|internationalist]], at the same time be a patriot? We hold that he not only can be but must be. The specific content of patriotism is determined by historical conditions. There is the "patriotism" of the Japanese aggressors and of [[Hitler]], and there is our patriotism. Communists must resolutely oppose the "patriotism" of the Japanese aggressors and of Hitler. The Communists of Japan and Germany are defeatists with regard to the wars being waged by their countries. To bring about the defeat of the Japanese aggressors and of Hitler by every possible means is in the interests of the Japanese and the German people, and the more complete the defeat the better. This is what the [[Japanese Communist Party|Japanese]] and [[Communist Party of Germany|German Communists]] should be doing and what they are doing. For the wars launched by the Japanese aggressors and Hitler are harming their own people as well as the people of the world. China's case is different, because she is the victim of aggression. Chinese Communists must therefore combine patriotism with internationalism.|[[Mao Zedong]]|[https://www.marxists.org/reference/archive/mao/selected-works/volume-2/mswv2_10.htm The Role of the Communist Party of China in the National War]|October 1938}}

Lenin also opposed patriotism and [[nationalism]] for oppressor nations and called for [[self-determination]] for oppressed nations:

{{Quote|Consequently, the interests of the Great-Russian proletariat require that the masses be systematically educated to champion—most resolutely, consistently, boldly and in a revolutionary manner—complete equality and the right to self-determination for all the nations oppressed by the Great Russians.|[[Vladimir Lenin]]|[https://www.marxists.org/archive/lenin/works/1914/dec/12a.htm On the National Pride of the Great Russians]|1914}}

[[Joseph Stalin|Stalin]] stated that nationalism is not inherently good or bad and that Marxists should only support national movements that weaken imperialism and not those that strengthen it:

{{Quote|This does not mean, of course, that the [[proletariat]] must support every national movement, everywhere and always, in every individual concrete case. It means that support must be given to such national movements as tend to weaken, to overthrow imperialism, and not to strengthen and preserve it. Cases occur when the national movements in certain oppressed countries came into conflict with the interests of the development of the proletarian movement. In such cases support is, of course, entirely out of the question. The question of the rights of nations is not an isolated, self-sufficient question; it is a part of the general problem of the proletarian revolution, subordinate to the whole, and must be considered from the point of view of the whole. In the forties of the last century [[Marx]] supported the national movement of the [[Poland|Poles]] and [[Hungary|Hungarians]] and was opposed to the national movement of the [[Czechia|Czechs]] and the South Slavs. Why? Because the Czechs and the South Slavs were then "reactionary peoples," "[[Russian Empire (1721–1917)|Russian]] outposts" in Europe, outposts of [[absolutism]]; whereas the Poles and the Hungarians were "revolutionary peoples," fighting against absolutism.|[[Joseph Stalin]]|[https://www.marxists.org/reference/archive/stalin/works/1924/foundations-leninism/ch06.htm The Foundations of Leninism: The National Question]|1924}}
{{LQuote|''First of all, a few remarks concerning Marxism and Leninism. As the question is formulated one might think that Marxism is one thing and Leninism is another, that one can be a Leninist without being a Marxist. But such an idea cannot be regarded as correct. Leninism is not Leninist doctrine minus Marxism. Leninism is Marxism of the epoch of imperialism and proletarian revolutions. In other words, Leninism includes all that Marx taught, plus Lenin’s new contribution to the treasury of Marxism, which necessarily follows from all that Marx taught (the doctrine of the dictatorship of the proletariat, the peasant question, the national question, the Party, the question of the social roots of reformism, the question of the most important deviations from communism, etc.). It would be better therefore, to formulate the question in such a way as to speak of Marxism or of Leninism (the two being fundamentally one and the same), and not to speak of Marxism and Leninism.''|—''The Tasks of the Young Communist League, 1925''}}
The confusion is often exploited by followers of this ideology so as to associate themselves with more progressive (and successful) patriotic movements, such as are seen in the [[State of Palestine|Palestinian]] struggle or in [[Mao Zedong|Mao]]'s [[People's Republic of China|People's Republic China]].

The name ''patriotic socialism'' was originally coined by its followers, thus marking a clear difference with ''socialist patriotism'' or other similar terms, but they started moving away from it when it became too adversarial to use it.

The people who are commonly associated as current leaders of patriotic socialism include [[Haz]], [[Caleb Maupin]], and [[Jackson Hinkle]].<ref name=":0">[https://regenerationmag.org/american-patriotism-or-national-liberation/ American Patriotism or National Liberation?]</ref><ref name=":2">[https://www.socialist.net/left-patriotism-an-opportunist-disorder.htm 'Left patriotism': An opportunist disorder]</ref><ref name=":1">{{Web citation|author=[[Infrared]]|newspaper=Youtube|title=Socialist Patriotism: America vs. America|date=2022-10-26|url=https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eveOKE4Ones&t=915s|retrieved=2022-10-3}}</ref>

== Origin ==

==Positions==

==Praxis==

{{Quote|Can a Communist, who is an [[proletarian internationalism|internationalist]], at the same time be a patriot? We hold that he not only can be but must be. The specific content of patriotism is determined by historical conditions. There is the "patriotism" of the Japanese aggressors and of [[Hitler]], and there is our patriotism. Communists must resolutely oppose the "patriotism" of the Japanese aggressors and of Hitler. The Communists of Japan and Germany are defeatists with regard to the wars being waged by their countries. To bring about the defeat of the Japanese aggressors and of Hitler by every possible means is in the interests of the Japanese and the German people, and the more complete the defeat the better. This is what the [[Japanese Communist Party|Japanese]] and [[Communist Party of Germany|German Communists]] should be doing and what they are doing. For the wars launched by the Japanese aggressors and Hitler are harming their own people as well as the people of the world. China's case is different, because she is the victim of aggression. Chinese Communists must therefore combine patriotism with internationalism.|[[Mao Zedong]]|[https://www.marxists.org/reference/archive/mao/selected-works/volume-2/mswv2_10.htm The Role of the Communist Party of China in the National War]|October 1938}}

Lenin also opposed patriotism and [[nationalism]] for oppressor nations and called for [[self-determination]] for oppressed nations:

{{Quote|Consequently, the interests of the Great-Russian proletariat require that the masses be systematically educated to champion—most resolutely, consistently, boldly and in a revolutionary manner—complete equality and the right to self-determination for all the nations oppressed by the Great Russians.|[[Vladimir Lenin]]|[https://www.marxists.org/archive/lenin/works/1914/dec/12a.htm On the National Pride of the Great Russians]|1914}}

[[Joseph Stalin|Stalin]] stated that nationalism is not inherently good or bad and that Marxists should only support national movements that weaken imperialism and not those that strengthen it:

{{Quote|This does not mean, of course, that the [[proletariat]] must support every national movement, everywhere and always, in every individual concrete case. It means that support must be given to such national movements as tend to weaken, to overthrow imperialism, and not to strengthen and preserve it. Cases occur when the national movements in certain oppressed countries came into conflict with the interests of the development of the proletarian movement. In such cases support is, of course, entirely out of the question. The question of the rights of nations is not an isolated, self-sufficient question; it is a part of the general problem of the proletarian revolution, subordinate to the whole, and must be considered from the point of view of the whole. In the forties of the last century [[Marx]] supported the national movement of the [[Poland|Poles]] and [[Hungary|Hungarians]] and was opposed to the national movement of the [[Czechia|Czechs]] and the South Slavs. Why? Because the Czechs and the South Slavs were then "reactionary peoples," "[[Russian Empire (1721–1917)|Russian]] outposts" in Europe, outposts of [[absolutism]]; whereas the Poles and the Hungarians were "revolutionary peoples," fighting against absolutism.|[[Joseph Stalin]]|[https://www.marxists.org/reference/archive/stalin/works/1924/foundations-leninism/ch06.htm The Foundations of Leninism: The National Question]|1924}}
'''Hoxhaism''' is an [[Dogmatism|dogmatic]] [[Anti-Revisionism|anti-revisionist]] ideology that is based off the writings of [[Enver Hoxha]] who was the former General Secretary of the [[Party of Labour of Albania]]. It first appeared as a distinct ideology after the 1970s in the context of both the [[Albanian–Soviet split]] and [[Sino-Albanian split]], Hoxhaism is based on tenets which include a rejection of perceived [[Social-imperialism|social-imperialist]] states, the defense of the political and economic policies in the [[Soviet Union]] under [[Stalin]], and a firm adherence to [[anti-imperialism]], particularly in regards to the building of [[Revolution|revolutionary]] movements.<ref>{{Web citation|newspaper=Red Star Vanguard|title=A Brief Guide to Hoxhaism.|date=2011-06-11|url=https://theredstarvanguard.wordpress.com/2011/06/11/a-brief-guide-to-hoxhaism/|retrieved=2022-09-06}}</ref>

Hoxhaism asserts itself to be the true continuation of [[Marxism–Leninism|Marxism-Leninism]] after the rise of revisionism during the 20th congress of the CPSU in 1956. As such, Hoxhaists rarely self-identify their ideology as being separate from Marxism-Leninism. Hoxhaism has been followed by numerous political parties that followed the pro-Albanian Line as a result of the Sino–Albanian Split, especially ones aligned with the [[International Conference of Marxist–Leninist Parties and Organizations (Unity & Struggle)|International Conference of Marxist–Leninist Parties and Organizations]].
