He had become a communist in the 1950s and went into hiding when Pinochet took power. He was caught after a year and imprisoned and tortured in the Air Force War Academy for two years. He was eventually released in 1976. He became head of the Communist Party's Military Commission in the 1980s and joined as part of the Manuel Rodriguez Patriotic Front (FPMR). He joined the central committee in 1988. He started leading the party in March of 2005.
