[[Alexander Alexandrov]], who later composed the [[State Anthem of the Soviet Union|Soviet anthem]], founded the choir in 1928 with 12 members from the Frunze Red Army. By 1937, it had grown to 150 members. [[Mikhail Gorbachev|Gorbachev]] renamed the choir to A. V.
