'''Solarpunk''' is a utopian and optimistic artistic style that tends to blend futuristic cityscapes with environmental themes such as greenspace, urban gardens, etc. It's generally regarded ~~and~~ as the opposite of the more pessimistic and dystopian [[cyberpunk]] aesthetic popularized by video games including Cyberpunk 2077. == Origin ==
The term was originally coined in 2008<ref>{{Web citation\|newspaper=Republic of the Bees\|title=From Steampunk to Solarpunk\|date=2008-04-30\|url=https://republicofthebees.blogspot.com/2008/04/from-steampunk-to-solarpunk.html\|archive-url=https://archive.ph/w3SOz}}</ref> but saw a surge (showing on Google Trends<ref>{{Web citation\|newspaper=Google Trends\|title=Query for the word 'solarpunk', worldwide, all time\|url=https://trends.google.com/trends/explore?date=all&q=solarpunk&hl=en}}</ref>) after the Chobani yoghurt commercial ''Dear Alice'' was published on Youtube in July 2021.<ref>{{Video citation\|url=https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z-Ng5ZvrDm4\|channel=THE LINE\|title=Dear Alice\|date=July 2021}}</ref>

It was only after the commercial that solarpunk became more than an art movement (opposed to the cyberpunk style).<ref>{{Web citation\|newspaper=Republic of the Bees\|title=From Steampunk to Solarpunk\|date=2008-04-30\|url=https://republicofthebees.blogspot.com/2008/04/from-steampunk-to-solarpunk.html\|archive-url=https://archive.ph/w3SOz\|quote=So, in honor of the Beluga Skysail's maiden voyage, I'm going to suggest a new literary genre: solarpunk.

I think the best way to explain solarpunk is by contrasting it to the science fiction and fantasy genre called steampunk, from which the idea of solarpunk derives.}}</ref>
