The Dominican Republic, is a country located on the island of Hispaniola in the Caribbean Sea. It occupies the eastern five-eighths of the island, whilst Haiti controls the western section. In the Caribbean it is the second largest country by area after Cuba, and the second largest by population after Haiti.
History[edit | edit source]
20th Century[edit | edit source]
The USA invaded the Dominican Republic four times between 1900 and 1933 and occupied the country for eight years[1] from 1916 to 1924.[2]
Trujillo era (1930–1961)[edit | edit source]
In 1930 Rafael Trujillo seized power, overthrowing president Horacio Vásquez. Trujillo ran a brutal anti-communist regime with support from the United States, where he was both president and ruled through a series of puppet presidents. His regime ended with his assassination in May 1963.[3]
Post-Trujillo[edit | edit source]
Juan Bosch became president democratically in February 1963. He called for land reform and nationalization of certain businesses. The USA removed him from power in a military coup in September. In April 1965, the United States sent 23,000 troops to put down a popular revolt that aimed to return Bosch to power.[4]
Immigration[edit | edit source]
The Dominican Republic deported 154,333 Haitians in 2022 and has built a 118-mile wall on the Haitian border. Children of immigrants born since 1929 are not born as Dominican citizens.[5]
