James Monroe (April 28, 1758 – July 4, 1831) was a Statesian politician who served as the fifth president of the United States from 1817 to 1825. A member of the Democratic-Republican Party, he was the last Founding Father to serve as president, reigning in the period following the War of 1812. Previously he served as Ambassador to France from 1794 to 1796 then to Britain from 1803 to 1807 and then as Secretary of State from 1811 to 1817 under James Madison.

Monroe is best known for the Monroe Doctrine, a policy by which the U.S. claimed the entirety of the Americas as its imperial territory. Monroe increased cooperation with the British in colonization of North America whilst expanding into the Spanish colonies, taking Florida in 1819. A slave owner, Monroe signed the Missouri Compromise, which would later sow the seeds for the Civil War, and supported the colonization of Liberia, with its capital, Monrovia, named in his honour.[1][2]
