The American Communist Party (ACP) is a self-described Marxist–Leninist political party operating in the territory of the United States and Canada. It was founded in Chicago in July 2024 by several patriotic socialist social media influencers and claims to be the legitimate successor to the historic Communist Party USA. Its Plenary Committee consists of Haz Al-Din, Henry Ahmad, and Grayson Preutz of Infrared; Eddie "Liger" Smith, Carlos Garrido, Noah Khrachvik, and Kyle Pettis of Midwestern Marx; former PCUSA International Secretary Chris Helali; Rev Laskaris of the RTSG; and most famously Jackson Hinkle.[2]
Although the party has added the names of various CPUSA sections as signatories of its founding declaration,[2] many of these sections were not aware they had signed the document and made statements distancing themselves from the ACP.[3] In response, an ACP supporter claimed that the signing sections had been "unconstitutionally expelled from [CPUSA]",[4] admitting that they had no authority to sign the CPUSA name on the ACP declaration.
Previously in 2022, patriotic socialists set up fake CPUSA accounts on Twitter to hijack the names of CPUSA sections as part of their failed CPUSA 2036 strategy.[5] Based on this, it is plausible to say that the ACP only used the name of CPUSA to boost their launch but otherwise had close to no contact with it.
History
Background
From late-2021 to mid-2024, Infrared and later Midwestern Marx touted the slogan "CPUSA 2036", openly encouraging their communities to join the Communist Party USA and struggle against the opportunist line of Joe Sims, all the while concealing their allegiances if necessary in order to avoid expulsion and "obeying party discipline and democratic centralism."[6] Haz criticised the CPUSA national leadership for replacing class war with culture war and for subordinating the working class to the neoliberal-imperialist Democratic Party;[7] while the national leadership denounced him as a "right-wing" "pseudo-Marxist" and his brand of patriotism as a form of national and social chauvinism (despite being settler nationalists themselves).[8][9]
This struggle culminated in the lead-up to the 2024 United States presidential election at the 32nd National Convention of the CPUSA in Chicago on 7–9 June 2024. The Convention adopted Resolution 5 which, while asserting their political independence, called for the CPUSA to support "a broad people's front to defeat fascism in all its forms, including Trump, Trumpism, and the MAGA forces" and for the party's members to "work on neighbourhood-based canvassing and to get out the vote with labor and allies for the strongest pro-worker and progressive candidates at every level."[10]
It devoted several paragraphs about the dangers of MAGA, treating a Republican victory as an existential threat to the workers' movement in the country. The Resolution did not mention the Democrats by name, but made repeated references to "democratic allies" and an "anti-extreme-right coalition" whose victory would be "a decisive electoral defeat for the fascist forces".[10] The Resolution was widely-recognised as an implicit endorsement of collaboration with the Democratic Party, and the manner in which it was adopted was labelled as unconstitutional and undemocratic.[7][11][12] A week after the National Convention was held, a petition calling for the reopening of discussion and voting on Resolution 5 due to the alleged "breaches in constitutionality" was launched, earning dozens of signatures.[13] Internally, many CPUSA members discussed their dissatisfaction with the national leadership. Some wanted to leave while others expressed a desire to continue the struggle within the party. In response, the entire Austin, Texas chapter of the CPUSA was liquidated for "factionalism".[14]
Formation
Ideology
The ACP is associated with the "MAGA Communism" trend of Haz Al-Din and Jackson Hinkle, both leaders of the party. In the ACP's party programme, the party omits properly dealing with the colonial question which dominates American history (never referencing land-back) and calls for the "Promotion of American Civilization".[15]
