Project FUBELT is the codename for the secret 1970 CIA operations that were to prevent Salvador Allende becoming president and to promote a military coup in Chile. FUBELT operations were split into Track I, using the Chilean parliament and outgoing president Eduardo Frei Montalva to block Allende's confirmation, and Track II, a military coup plot. Although initially separate, the operations of Track I also quickly evolved into coup plotting.

The operation culminated in the failed kidnapping and assassination of René Schneider, commander-in-chief of the Chilean Army, but ultimately failed to foster a coup environment. Although the 1970 attempt failed with some conspirators arrested, it would lay the groundwork for future CIA operations in Chile, which would eventually result in the 1973 coup led by Augusto Pinochet.[1]
