John Adams (October 30, 1735 – July 4, 1826) was a Statesian politician and Founding Father who served as the second president of the United States from 1797 to 1801. Previously Adams served as the first vice president of the United States from 1789 to 1797 and as a diplomat. Adams was the only president of the Federalist Party and the only president of the first 12, other than his son John Quincy Adams (1825–1829), to not own slaves.

Adams is most infamous for signing the four draconian Alien and Sedition Acts of 1798 during the Quasi-War with France. These acts made citizenship for immigrants more restricted, criminalised "false criticism" of the government and allowed the president to detain and deport foreigners. Three of these acts were removed under his successor, Thomas Jefferson, but the Alien Enemies Act would remain and be used by future administrations to detain citizens of "enemy" nations.[1][2]
