William Jefferson Clinton (né Bylthe III; born August 19, 1946), commonly known as Bill Clinton, is a Statesian politician and war criminal[1] who served as the 42nd president of the United States of America from 1993 to 2001. He previously served as governor of Arkansas from 1979 to 1981 and again from 1983 to 1992. He is a member of the U.S. Democratic Party and husband of fellow politician Hillary Clinton.

Clinton signed the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) into law, which came into effect in 1994.[2]

Some of the events occurring during Clinton's administration were a major four-day bombing campaign in Iraq in 1998, code named Operation Desert Fox, and the 78 day NATO bombing of Yugoslavia in 1999. During the 78 days of the bombing campaign, NATO warplanes flew over 35,000 combat missions against 200 Yugoslav cities and towns, targeting apartment buildings, schools, hospitals, factories and other workplaces, with the attacks turning more than 1 million people into refugees.[1]

Early life

Clinton was born on August 19, 1946 in Hope, a small city in Arkansas, to William Jefferson Blythe Jr. and Virginia Cassidy. Clinton's father died in an auto accident several months before his birth and for his early years Clinton was primarily raised by his grandparents whilst his mother attended nursing school. In 1950 his mother married car dealer and abusive alcoholic Roger Clinton, from who Clinton gained his surname.[3]

Clinton was an undergraduate at Georgetown University in Washington, D.C. before gaining a Rhodes scholarship to study at Oxford University in the United Kingdom. Whilst at university he was exposed to the movement opposing the Vietnam War, and though he participated, he avoided the more radical elements and there is also some evidence to suggest that Clinton participated in Operation Chaos and reported anti-war protestors to the CIA. Clinton used his political connections to delay being drafted and then lucked out on the change in drafting system to a lottery which allowed him to avoid it and go on to study at Yale Law School.[4][5]

Presidential campaign

Clinton ran against George H. W. Bush in the 1992 presidential campaign. Both candidates were involved in the Iran–Contra affair, and Clinton had deployed the Contras to Honduras near the Nicaraguan border.[5]
