Andrew Murray Burnham (born 7 January 1970) is a British politician who has served as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom and Leader of the Labour Party since July 2026. Previously he served as mayor of Greater Manchester from 2017 to 2026 and held various ministerial and shadow cabinet positions, most notably as Secretary of State for Health from 2009 to 2010 under Gordon Brown.
Burnham's career has revolved around political opportunism, starting out as a Blairite minister who supported the Iraq War before pivoting to social democracy with the rise of Corbyn. As mayor of Manchester he implemented some progressive policies which he proposes rolling out nationwide as prime minister. But he has also moderated any progressive stances to appeal to the Labour right whilst also claiming to condemn the neoliberal order he is apart of.[1]
Premiership[edit | edit source]
On July 20th 2026 Burnham was appointed prime minister after being crowned Labour Leader on July 17th with no opposition. Burnham made continuity with Keir Starmer clear whilst announcing short term policies, such as ending rough sleeping in England and a £2 cap on bus fares, to maintain his popularity. Early on Burnham made his commitment to imperialism clear with announcements of uncritical support for Ukraine and allowing the U.S. to use British military bases for the illegal Iran War.[2][3][4]
Much of Starmer’s right wing cabinet remained in place whilst new major appointments reflected Burnham's devotion to imperialism and austerity. The militarist agenda was represented by the selection of former defence secretary, John Healy, as chancellor and right wing hawk, Wes Streeting, as defence secretary, in order to reach the NATO target of 3% of the budget spent on the military. Meanwhile other major departments retained right wing stalwarts, most notably Shabana Mahmood as home secretary to continue her draconian anti-immigration offensive and repression of the Pro-Palestine movement.[5]
