The Algerian War of Independence, also known as the Algerian Revolution, the Franco-Algerian War, or the Algerian War, was an armed conflict between France and the Algerian National Liberation Front (FLN) from 1954 to 1962, which led to Algeria winning its independence from French colonial rule. An important decolonization war, it was a complex conflict characterized by guerrilla warfare and French war crimes with major repercussions in the politics of metropolitan France.

In 1945, French paratroopers violently disbanded the Friends of Liberty and the Manifesto and killed tens of thousands of Algerians. The National Liberation Front (FLN) formed in 1954 following a counterattack on the French.[1]

Within three months, the population supported the independence movement. All Algerian political groups supported the FLN against the French, including liberals and communists. Between 300,000 and one million people died in the liberation war.[2]
