Rutherford Birchard Hayes (October 4, 1822 – January 17, 1893) was a Statesian politician and lawyer who served as the 19th president of the United States from 1877 to 1881. Hayes served in the Union army during the Civil War, achieving the rank of brevet major general. Hayes served in Congress from 1865 to 1867 and as governor of Ohio from 1868 to 1872 and again from 1876 to 1877 before his swearing-in as president.

His election as President was contested and Hayes ultimately betrayed black people by making a deal with the Democrats to end Reconstruction to become president, directly leading to the empowering of the former slave owners and the start of segregation. Hayes governed in favour of the northern industrialists and sent the army to crush the Great Railroad Strike of 1877, one of the largest strikes in U.S. history.[1][2]
