Ceuta is a Spanish colonial exclave in Africa located on the northern coast of Morocco. Along with Melilla and the plazas de soberanía, the territories make up the remnants of the Spanish colonial empire and Spain's refusal to return them to Morocco continue to strain diplomatic relations.

History[edit | edit source]

2026 migrant crisis[edit | edit source]

Since July 2026 over 80,000 people have crossed the Moroccan border with Spain causing disruption and chaos in the territory as well as the death of at least 100 migrants. The crisis was most likely created by the Moroccan government as a means of pressuring Spain geopolitically but the specific reason for this has been the subject of debate.[1]

Some commenters suspect that in light of the United States urging Morocco to "punish" Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez and the allocation of allocate $40 million in national security funding to Morocco, that the crisis was manufactured by the U.S., the CIA and Israel to pressure Spain on its criticism of the Palestinian genocide. Other commenters have pointed to Morocco's outraged reaction mere days before the crisis occurred to the news that Spain had admitted the leader of the Polisario Front, Brahim Ghali, for medical treatment.[1][2]
