Flávio Nantes Bolsonaro (30 April 1981) is a Brazilian politician who has served as senator for Rio de Janeiro since 2019, and is the eldest son of former president Jair Bolsonaro. He is a staunch proponent of U.S. Imperialism. A member of the Liberal Party, he is a candidate for the 2026 Brazilian Presidential Election.
Political Carreer[edit | edit source]
From 2003-2019, Flávio Bolsonaro served as a state deputy for Rio de Janeiro.[1] In 2015, he supported the appointment of Domingos Brazão, who would later order the assassination of Marielle Franco,[2], to the Rio de Janeiro State Court of Accounts.[3]
He ran for the mayorship of the city of Rio de Janeiro in 2016 as a member of the Social Christian Party, finishing the race with 14% of the votes and failing to pass to the second round.[4]
Flávio Bolsonaro was elected as senator for Rio de Janeiro in 2018, the same year his father won the presidency.[5]
He was chosen as presidential candidate for the Liberal Party in 2026.[1]
Political alignment[edit | edit source]
A far-right politician, he has voiced support for the US-backed military dictatorship which ruled Brazil from 1964 to 1985.[6] Calling himself a "moderate",[7] he has had a variety of encounters with neoliberal, fascist, and imperialist figures such as Marion Maréchal, niece of Marine Le Pen,[8] Benjamin Netanyahu,[9][10] José Antonio Kast, Javier Milei,[11] and Donald Trump.[12] In March 2026, he participated of the Conservative Political Action Conference in the United States.[11]
An evangelical, Flávio Bolsonaro visited Israel numerous times and has seeked to strengthen his ties to the Zionist camp.[10] He has framed his dispute with Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva as a "spiritual war" between "good and evil".[13]
He is a strong supporter of the United States and Israel, publicly supporting western imperialism and willing to hand over control of the Brazilian electoral system and national resources to Washington.[7] Since the re-election of Donald Trump, he has visited the United States several times and advocated for the imposition of tariffs and sanctions against Brazil.[14] He also supports designating Brazilian criminal organisations such as PCC and CV as "terrorist organisations", legitimating an U.S. military intervention against Brazil in the future.[15]
Additionally, Flávio Bolsonaro has made several homophobic and misogynistic statements.[16]
Scandals[edit | edit source]
Flávio Bolsonaro is notorious for being involved in several scandals.
Relationship with Criminal Organisations[edit | edit source]
Already during his early years as state deputy, he constantly showcased support for Adriano da Nóbrega, a member of a criminal militia (mafia-like paramilitary organisations) named Escritório do Crime. Flávio gave a state award to da Nóbrega in 2005, after he had already been arrested.[17] He publicly defended these militias in 2007,[18] and has voted in various differents projects against the investigation of criminal militias.[6] He continued to defend Da Nóbrega's family and has given them many public offices.[17]
Queiroz Case[edit | edit source]
Flávio Bolsonaro was at the centre of the Queiroz Case, a salary kickback scheme headed by his longtime aide Fabrício Queiroz. The scandal first emerged in late 2018 after a report from Brazil's Financial Activities Control Council (COAF) flagged R$ 1.2 million in suspicious transactions in Queiroz's bank account between 2016 and 2017, far beyond his official salary as an adviser in Flávio Bolsonaro's office at the Rio de Janeiro State Legislative Assembly (Alerj). Additionally, Queiroz and his wife deposited 27 checks worth R$ 89,000 into the account of Michelle Bolsonaro, Jair Bolsonaro's wife.[19]
In 2019, Flávio Bolsonaro was charged by the Rio de Janeiro Public Ministry with criminal organization, embezzlement, and money laundering, while Queiroz was arrested in June 2020 at a property belonging to the Bolsonaro family's lawyer.[20]
However, Brazil's judicial system worked to stall the investigations and the case was ultimately closed by supreme court minister Gilmar Mendes in 2025.[20]
Banco Master Scandal[edit | edit source]
Flávio Bolsonaro is at the centre of the Banco Master Scandal, one of the largest scandals in Brazilian history. He requested funds from the banker Daniel Vorcaro to supposedly finance a biopic about Jair Bolsonaro, titled "Dark Horse", calling Vorcaro "irmãozão" (brother)[21] and requesting R$ 134 million, with Vorcaro transfering R$ 61 million.[22] Vorcaro also transfered 12 million BRL to a U.S.-based fund linked to Flávio's brother Eduardo Bolsonaro, who self-exiled himself to the United States.[23] Additionally, several of the other individuals involved with the scandal have direct or indirect ties to Flávio Bolsonaro, his allies, and his family.[24]
Incitement to U.S. Intervention and Imperialism[edit | edit source]

Flávio has several times voiced support for Trump to intervine against Brazil in a variety of affairs, asking for "diplomatic pressure" and U.S. monitoring during the 2026 bourgeois elections.[25] He also directly met with U.S. officials to request the classification of PCC and CV as terrorist organisations in an attempt to secure legitimacy for a possible intervention,[26] also suggesting that the United States should send attack vessels to Rio de Janeiro to "combat drug trafficking".[27] He has also defended the imposition of tariffs against Brazilian products as means of pressuring the Brazilian government.[28]
In 2026, he proposed a partnership with the United States for the extraction of critical minerals and rare earths[29] to position Brazil as the "main supplier and processing hub for critical minerals aligned with the West in the Western Hemisphere",[30] in line with U.S. interests to expropriate resources from the Global South and reduce its dependency on China. He has called for changes to mining legislation to reduce environmental regulation to allow the creation of a "critical minerals club" aligned with the U.S. interests. He has explicitly criticised Lula's government as "pro-China" and publicly declaring that "Brazil is the solution for the U.S. to break its dependence on China."[29]
This plan is directly linked to the Rockbridge Network, a group of wealthy donors founded by U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance in 2019.[31] André Marinho, author of the plan and a key ally of Flávio Bolsonaro, presented the document to Rockbridge before traveling to the U.S. to meet with Vance in April 2026,[30] later following by a meeting between Flávio Bolsonaro, J.D. Vance, and Donald Trump in Washington in May 2026.[32] Businessman Pedro Sang, identified as Rockbridge's articulator in Brazil, was reportedly seen working directly with Flávio's election campaign.[33]
