João Belchior Marques Goulart (1 March 1919 – 6 December 1976), more commonly known as Jango, was a Brazilian politician who served as the 24th President of Brazil from 7 September 1961 to 2 April 1964, when he was overthrown in a CIA-sponsored[1] military coup. He had previously served as the 14th Vice President from 31 January 1956 to 25 August 1961 under presidents Juscelino Kubitschek and Jânio Quadros.

Despite being constantly accused of being one, Jango was not a communist[2][3], though he sympathised with some socialist proposals[4] and gave some few positions to communists. Rather, he was one of the main supporters of Trabalhismo, a nationalist and desenvolvimentist form of social democracy. He was one of the main political heirs of Getúlio Vargas.

His presidency was deeply opposed by the Brazilian comprador bourgeoisie[4], with his educational, fiscal, political, urban, and agrarian reforms, collectively named Reformas de Base, attracting significant hatred from the traditional elites of Brazil, and also from the United States, which all supported the military coup against Jango in 1964[5][6], instituting the 21-year long military dictatorship which ruled Brazil until 1985. Goulart died in Argentina while in exile in 1976, possibly assassinated by the military regime[7].
