UMkhonto weSizwe

From ProleWiki, the proletarian encyclopedia

This article is about the ANC armed wing launched in 1961. For the political party launched in 2023, see MK Party.

uMkhonto weSizwe (MK), meaning "Spear of the Nation" refers to the armed wing of South Africa's African National Congress (ANC). It was launched on December 16, 1961.[1] In the early 1960s, MK conducted numerous sabotage operations. In 1967 and 1968, MK engaged in major battles and skirmishes with Rhodesian forces in Zimbabwe, with MK fighting alongside ZIPRA. From the late 60s to mid-70s, there was a lull in MK's operations but its propaganda work continued. After the Soweto uprising in 1976, MK's operations once again increased.[2][3]
